Skidaway Island trail running is easy to do at Skidaway Island State Park near Savannah, GA. The park has a handful of trail loops and boardwalks through forest and salt marshes.
It costs $5 to park and the backseat gets covered in dog hair. But, the many happy faces your dog displays is worth it.
I surprised my deaf cattle dog by gearing us up for a run, but then heading to the car for a short 15 minute ride to Skidaway Island State Park.
Skidaway Island Trail Running
There about 6+ miles of trails which have this tropical, marshy, creepy vibe to them. I am glad they keep the trails clearly marked, because getting lost would get very creepy, very fast. It looks like a jungle away from the marshes. Most of it is in connected loops so you can get in more than 6 miles without getting bored.
Along the main river, you can sometimes see the dolphins coming in to feed.
The dolphins in Savannah have a unique hunting technique not found anywhere else in the world. I had no idea until I watched the documentary: North America. You can check it out the dolphin clip on YouTube.
We didn’t see any dolphins, but we didn’t stay long, because Oakley was threatening to wallow in the mud.
Animals visible from the boardwalk include endless small crabs, herons, and other birds.
The observation deck is a nice place to stop for a moment and take in the sights.
I think Oakley enjoyed his Skidaway Island trail running adventure.
We ran 5 miles and did another 1 or 2 hiking. Visit Skidaway Island to get away from the big tourist crowds of Savannah.
