January always seems like a good time for experimentation. Everyone is making resolutions and trying to live healthier lives. Last January, I experimented by not eating significant amounts of lactose for the month. After, I decided to refrain indefinitely.

This January, I thought it would be interesting to experiment with waking up earlier. I lost my “home-office” for most of this year and people forget autonomy and personal time when its taking place at the kitchen table. Waking up, eating well, and working on things of importance to me (blogging, novels, etc) before distractions appear seemed like an excellent choice.

So the 5AM experiment began.

And 6 days later, the 5AM experiment ended.

What sort of newbie messes with their sleep schedule during one of her peak marathon training weeks?!!

The mid-week runs went OK, but I struggled with motivation and energy. I truly realized my mistake this weekend.

Saturday I did little but binge-watch The Flash, pushing my long run to Sunday.

Two miles into Sunday’s run, I wanted to go home and take a nap. Too bad I still had 17 miles to go.

Fortunately, I got into my groove after 6 or so miles and was able to complete the run. I ran for 3 hours and 20 minutes.

And then I went home and took a nap (+ all the recovery things like protein smoothies, icing, stretching, rolling, etc).

I’m a productive gal. I can do a lot of things. But I can’t change my sleeping habits AND power through my training. Priorities.

Sleepy heads

So the 5AM experiment is on hold until AFTER the marathon.
